F.A.Q.'s

Q: "When do you rehearse?"
A: See dates on the Calendar. Rehearsals usually happen from 3:30 - 5:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Often, I schedule a day off on Friday for much of the cast, while I work with certain groups within the cast.

Q: "Can I play a sport and still be in the play?"
A: Yes, but it's not easy. Some athlete - actors have had a great time with us, appearing in one scene only as "the boy friend" or "the wolf."

Q: "Can I miss practices?"
A: We try to make our schedule around our actors' busy schedules, but there are obvious limits. No matter how good the actor is, the scene will no good if the cast hasn't worked enough with that actor to make the scenes seem real. Letting someone skip rehearsals isn't fair to the other actors.

    W.ARTS TOURS!

Do you have a venue in mind for us? We performed our opera THE FROG PRINCE at Woodward Academy's lower school in October, and seek another venue. A retirement center? A children's hospital ward? A lower school social studies class? E-mail scott@smootpage.com with suggestions.

We will add to our repertoire as we go from year to year. Future plans include a musical-comedy look at ancient history and mythology, a suite of songs for characters from cartoons and stories, an opera for BEOWULF, and a dramatic presentation for Black history month.

    BACKSTAGE AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES HELP NEEDED

Every production needs these tasks done, and we either do them ourselves or we have good volunteers who do it better! See if there's a job here for you!
    • Props manager: Props include includes any objects that any characters pick up, plus furniture. Your job is to beg, borrow, buy, make props needed for a show. Arrange for us to have these or substitutes for rehearsals ASAP. Set up a labelled props area backstage for actors to use during the show. Check to be sure that props are in place before and after dress rehearsals and performances. Return or dispose of props at end of show.
    • Costumer with assistant dressers: In a school show, we must count on parents' ingenuity for their own children's clothing. However, the Costumer can use resources (the school's costume racks, and W.arts money) to help coordinate and put finishing touches on the costumes. As we approach dress rehearsal, the Costumer must arrange for the orderly hanging and putting on and taking off of costumes.
    • Set design, construction, painting, decorating: Work with the director to get materials for a set and to assemble it.
    • Host, hostess: For a school group, we need someone who can help provide some snacks at long rehearsals, maybe dinner for evening events, and to set up the ticket-taking apparatus on performance nights, and the set strike party. Smoot does not do cast parties.
